The flag of the United Arab Emirates consists of three equally sized horizontal stripes with a red vertical stripe on the left side of the flag. The horizontal stripes are from top to bottom, green, white and black.

The flag of the United Arab Emirates was adopted on December 2, 1971 when the country was formed by a union of seven sheikdoms. Before 1971 the seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah and Umm al-Qaiwain were known as the Trucial States, in reference of a nineteenth-century truce between the British and some Arab sheikhs. Until the mid 19th century the area was known as the Pirate Coast because of the number of pirates there.
